  • Teacup Pomeranians

Teacup Pomeranians are a breed of dog that are smaller than the standard size Pomeranian. The term teacup is supposed to mean that the dog labeled so can fit in a teacup. Basically, many dogs can fit in a teacup especially during their puppy days. In all intents and purposes, teacup Pomeranians are basically the smallest of the standard sized Pomeranians you can find. In this way, there is basically no guarantee that you have a teacup Pomeranian until it matures to its normal size and it is the smallest size within the breed standard.

Many reputable Pomeranian breeders do not like to label their dogs as teacup Pomeranians, Toy Pomeranians or any other such names. The reason behind this is that all Pomeranians are called Pomeranians.

    Breed Standard For Pomeranians

The teacup Pomeranians are a breed of dog that is descended from the Spitz variety of dogs. It is a relative of the Great Spitz as well as the Japanese Spitz. There are distinctive standards and characteristics for Pomeranians which are also applicable for all kinds of Pomeranians, even the so called teacup Pomeranians.

Dogs are measured for height at the withers or shoulders. The standard for all Pomeranian dogs is to weigh around three to seven pounds but for show Pomeranians it is better for them to be around four to six pounds. Overall, dogs that weigh under three pounds or are over seven pounds are disqualified from shows and other official competitions. This standard says a lot for teacup Pomeranians because the weight limit means that most of the so called teacup Pomeranians are actually well within the limits of the breed standards, which make them in reality ordinary Pomeranians.

The height measurement for Pomeranians should be taken from the shoulders of the dog and it should correspond to its weight. The withers span should be half of the span of the dog's brisket. This is the leg part of the animal. Teacup Pomeranians are therefore just ordinary Pomeranians only so called due to their minimal size. Pomeranians are supposed to appear sturdy and should be a compact looking dog with a slightly square looking frame. The tail of the Pomeranian should be carried high by the animal and has a curl to it while it rests on its back, heavily plumed. Some of the Pomeranian puppies are born with the characteristic lean towards a curl on the tail while other puppies are born with straight tails. The tail becomes more accentuated as the dog enters its second month of life. The so called teacup Pomeranians also has the characteristic curl on the tail and there is little difference from the smaller Pomeranians from the average sized ones physically, except in the weight and height.

    Behavior

All Pomeranians have the same temperament no matter how they are labeled by the breeders. Teacup Pomeranians, miniature Pomeranians and toy Pomeranians have a general temperament from which only little deviations may be an individualistic thing. This tiny dog packs quite a wallop when it comes to spunk and spirit. It makes up its diminutive size by being extroverted and very lively most of the times. It is basically a human centered dog which means that it is content to be with its human owner or family most of the time. They are a devoted breed of dogs and are ideal as companion dogs but can also be great watchdogs. No matter if they are labeled as teacup Pomeranians or whatever, this breed of dog can be feisty and lively. Due to their susceptibility to being rowdy or over excited at times, their time with children, especially with younger children should be closely supervised. Teacup Pomeranians or the smaller sized Pomeranians should be doubly monitored as younger children may mishandle them due to their small size.

Overall, it is a fact that teacup Pomeranians are in reality just Pomeranians which are runts of the litter or those that have been bred specifically for their small size. The truth of the matter is that it is difficult to guarantee that a puppy will be small until it actually matures. The terms teacup Pomeranians and toy Pomeranians only signify that these are at their minimal standard limit but still of the same breed.
