If you can reach your doorknob, obviously the door is not safe. This is not a problem for pet doors that are designed for small animals.

Usefulness

One of the advantages of getting a pet door installed is that your dog (or cat) will use it ALL the time. Your dog has to be able to go through the door comfortably; don't forget to take into account that young pups will grow very fast.
