Barking Collars: Necessary Or Not?
Is There Anything You Can Do?
First of all, see why your dog is barking. What triggers the barking? Is it
people walking past the house or yard? Is it boredom? If you can eliminate the
underlying issue, you might not need a collar for your barking dog.
If your dog barks from anxiety or stress, punishing your dog for barking will
only increase the problem. Instead of punishing your dog for a natural reaction,
try to use positive reinforcement with your pet. One thing that you can do is to
expose your dog to the stimulus that scares it, like a big group of people, a
running mottor, or the ring of a cellphone, while you are next to it and calm it
down. If necessary, consult a professional dog trainer to get some useful
advice.
About The Bark Collar?
Some owners find that using a bark collar is effective in reducing excessive
barking that isn't related to stress. Three different methods are available, as
well as combinations of methods for even greater effectiveness.
The first one involves a spray of citrus smell when the dog barks. Some of these
Bark collars even hiss a bit before releasing the spray, so that dogs can learn
to stop the barking before the spray happens.
The next type of barking collars work by emitting a sound that is so high
pitched that only dogs can hear it, and that is emitted every time the dog
barks. Dogs dislike this sound, and they eventually stop barking in order to
make the sound stop.
Finally, electronic bark collars work by giving a small shock to the dog's neck
whenever it barks. The shock is not dangerous or painful, but it serves in
calling the dog's attention.
Barking Collars are a good method for teaching a dog to behave and to reduce
excessive barking. They can work by citronella spray, sonic / ultrasonic sounds,
or electronic static. All of these are harmless, yet effective in reducing the
amount of barking.
