  • Physical Appearance Of The Pomeranian

All breeds are considered to have different standards among their breed, as with the Pomeranian.  This is the physical appearance of the standardized breed which is used mostly for judging of dog shows. Pomeranians do vary in color and size as most dogs, but here are the basics you need to know.

The general appearance is considered to be one of a compact, short coupled dog, with fluffy fur and a curved tail. The head and nose are likened to the look of a fox; the skull is slightly flat, but large in proportion to the muzzle area.  The nose is usually black, or a dark brown in color, but can be self colored, which means the color is the exact color of the dog's coat.   Eyes are medium sized, slightly oval, but not full.  They are always dark and bright, showing a great deal of intelligence.  The ears are small and sit fully erect further back on their head.  The jaw line is strong, with teeth that should meet in a perfect scissor bite, which means the top teeth completely overlap the bottom set of teeth and set square to the jaw.

The neck of the Pomeranian is rather short and well set into the shoulders giving them a look of actually having no neck at all.  Again the body is compact, and very small.  They are thinner animals showing ribs, but because of the coat you will not see that.  The chest is wide, but in proportion to the rest of the tiny body. Pomeranians have very petite feet, characteristic of a cat actually in the way they look like small paws. The tail is very distinct in the Pomeranians.  It is a feather like tail that curves back and fans forward over the dogs back.

    The Pomeranian Coat And Colors

The Pomeranian actually has two coats.  The undercoat is very soft and fluffy, while the outer coat consists of much longer, straighter hair, with a harsh texture.  The thick under coat allows the guard hair to look softer and less intimidating then it really is.

Before the adult coat grows in, the Pomeranian puppy loses its first coat at around 3 months old.  They are born with just fluff and cloud like hair but when they lose that, they are often left looking ragged and spotty until they are about 1 year old.  That is the time when the double coat begins to grow in, but it can take months for it to fully mature.

Pomeranians can come in many colors but the most popular, especially for breeding and showing, are the solid colors.  The most common are red, orange, cream or white, black, brown, and blue.  The coat can also be parti-colored, which means it is white with colored markings, or it could be have a sable colored coat.  Those are the black and tan, wolf, or orange sable coats that you may see on Pomeranians. In show dogs, white and tan markings are incredibly undesirable on solid colored Pomeranians, and the dogs are therefore discouraged from entering.

If you are not planning on showing or breeding your Pomeranian, then go with whatever color you like. Pomeranians shouldn't be chosen based on color, but rather based on the personality of the Pomeranian, and whether it fits with your lifestyle. People often say dogs begin to resemble their owner, but in the case of the Pomeranian, you should find out the personality of the Pomeranian first.
